I recommend Henri Daniel Rops books if you can find them. Mostly out of print though I think. He was very Catholic and wasn't afraid to say so.
He made the history come alive, not dry as dust like some. It was a set, "History of the Church of Christ", still some used copies around at reasonable prices:
