Is it not more correct to say "the" magisterium as opposed to "his" magisterium?

It depends, Justin. When referring to the Pope's own body of teaching, one can refer to "his magisterium."  Cardinal Burke used this expression in his recent EWTN interview, in which he expressed doubt that Evangelii Gaudium was part of his magisterium (since it is not clear that it contains any specific teaching).
