Collection of Lies
#1

How about a thread devoted to lies told about Catholic teaching and Church History?  I'll start.

From http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday4.htm, about the Kol Nidre prayer prayed on Yom Kppur:

Quote: "This prayer has often been held up by anti-Semites as proof that Jews are untrustworthy (we do not keep our vows), and for this reason the Reform movement removed it from the liturgy for a while. In fact, the reverse is true: we make this prayer because we take vows so seriously that we consider ourselves bound even if we make the vows under duress or in times of stress when we are not thinking straight. This prayer gave comfort to those who were converted to Christianity by torture in various inquisitions, yet felt unable to break their vow to follow Christianity. In recognition of this history, the Reform movement restored this prayer to its liturgy. "

This is a lie. The Church has never approved of forced conversions (unlike the post-Temple Jewish religion, c.f. the Idumeans). And as to "the inquisitions," here's why the Spanish Inquisition was called, how it was run, and what role torture played in it: http://www.fisheaters.com/spanishinquisition.html  The Spanish Inquisition had NO jurisdiction WHATSOEVER over Jews. Only Christians could be brought before the Inquisition.

In those mere 16 words are THREE separate lies: 1) that the Inquisition had jurisdiction over Jews, 2) that torture was used extensively and in order to "force conversions," and 3) that forced conversion were a thing in the first place.

Seriously, how can people lie and lie and lie about History and get away with it?

"Who for thirty long years tread the slippery and deceitful path
of abhorrent Catholicism, but who to-day stands at the
Vatican's door, with the torch of Protestant wisdom,
and denounces Popery with a tongue
livid with the power of
a living God."

I'm sorry, what?

"CATHOLIC TRADITION - Mary is the mother of God.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS - Mary is the mother of the earthly Jesus, not God."

Jesus = God.
Mary = mother of Jesus.

Therefore,

Mary = mother of God.

It's not hard.

"CATHOLIC TRADITION - Purgatory, nuns, popes.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS - None of these is mentioned in the Bible. It is a sin to add to the Bible. "

Aside from the fact that proof of Purgatory, the basis for nuns, and the Papacy is outlined in the Bible, 'Bible' isn't mentioned by name in the Bible either, you sinner!  :O

Some of these websites are nuttier than a squirrel's breakfast.

Neither is the teaching that the Bible alone is the sole infallible rule of faith. Scripture does not teach sola scriptura.

Bingo. The Bible says the Church is the pillar and foundation of truth. The average Protestant would likely say it's the Bible.

Neither is a list of which books are inspired by God and which aren't. No, the table of contents doesn't count.
