Yep.  The blower helps hot air circulate throughout the house.  It won't work if you lose power, but the stove will still heat up the immediately surrounding area.

We've settled on a pellet stove with a generator for backup.

Update: we've using the pellet stove for two months now, and love it!  We can keep it 72-ish downstairs, and 65 or so upstairs.  Much lower power bill so far, as we haven't been using the heat pump.  Plus, the stove feeds itself, so it keeps running during the night.
