I actually found Rodney Stark's God's Battalions in the public library a couple yrs ago. It's a good short history. Unfortunately modern Western academics for the most part are sympathetic to Islam. Some Western historian in recent years actually wrote praisingly of the viciously anti-Christian Baibars, and let's not forget all the Saladin admirers out there.

you wont find that in these books.
