Mass in Latin?

Adrian Fortescue, wrote, the traditional Latin Mass is "the most venerable in all Christendom, with a history of unbroken use far longer than that of any Eastern rite, there being no doubt that the essential parts of the Mass are of Apostolic origin"..and which “From roughly the time of St. Gregory [d. 604] we have the text of the Mass, its order and arrangement, as a sacred tradition that no one has ventured to touch it except in unimportant details,” (The Mass, A Study of the Roman Liturgy, London, 1912).

This is quite laughable.  The liturgies of St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom come from the mid to late 4th century.  If the earliest texts of the Latin mass are from the early 7th century, then it is presumably older than that, but probably not 300 years older.  Sorry Fortescue, ya wrong.

Quote:The Eastern Rites adopted putting their liturgies in the vernacular tongue, and their rites are all pretty much divided up by ethnic lines(Russian, Ukranian, Syriac, Greek, etc. etc.).  It is also one of the reasons why they have never had much of a missionary effort to the rest of the world.

The Eastern churches never adopted the vernacular.  Liturgy was always in the vernacular.  Some of the Slavic churches adopted Slavonic as a liturgical language, but the norm has always been the vernacular.  Using a non-vernacular is the novelty, relatively speaking.  In fact, Latin isn't the language of the Latin Church because it was the language of the Roman Empire, but rather because it was the vernacular of the churches in Western Europe.  The Latin church didn't use Latin as a non-vernacular language until Latin in the West had evolved into the various Romance languages.
