Beautiful words on venial vs. mortal sin.
From St. Ambrose:
(I spoke this from my Missal into my iPhone, so if there are any errors I apologize. However, I’ve looked it over and it appears to be OK).

The dead man was carried to the tomb. For us this tomb consists of our bad habits, and Christ frees us from them. We shall escape from this tomb if we listen to the voice of God. And if there is a sin which we cannot ourselves wash away by our tears, may the Church, our Mother weep for us; she who intercedes for each of her children, like a widowed mother for her only son, for she experiences a spiritual grief which is all her own when she sees her children lured to death by mortal sin.
