I don't understand why the rosary is so important

I would say it has something to do with the fact that Christ is the new Adam and Mary is the new Eve, and just as Eve first tasted the fruit, Mary will be the one to crush the serpents head, and it's also said that Mary is the exact antithesis of Satan. Hence why the Rosary and the BVM is the most powerful weapon in our arsenal.

First of all, the seventh promise, "Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church" is particularly important to me, because at present I am excommunicate and cannot receive the sacraments.  If I die before this is resolved, I shudder to think of my fate, so I pray the Rosary every day, several times a day.

Secondly, there is the third promise, which states "The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies" is also pertinent to me, as I have been able to successfully replace a few of my former vices with the Rosary.  To wit, instead of indulging the nasty habits I had formed while out of the Church, I started praying the Rosary instead.  The old saw that you can defeat one habit by starting a new one has certainly held true for me, as I now pray the Rosary instead of engaging in my old harmful and foolish vices.  I recommend it!

I was out of the church for 40 years, being a very sinful person, and when I returned to the fold, I decided to do what I was told instead of doing what I wanted to do.  The first thing my new pastor told me to do, a little over a year ago, was to pray the Rosary daily.  It brought back all the wonderful memories I had when I was a child of praying the old familiar prayers I learned in elementary school (Catholic school), and made me feel strongly that I was coming home.

The rosary also helps me keep my mind on the Holy Trinity and the Saints; I feel that I'm actually speaking to them in their own language.  It has also given me a new and very nice relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is good for me, having had such a terrible relationship over the years with my own mother.  Having that frame of mind every day keeps me from falling away again, which is something I fear greatly.  Also, it keeps me aware that what I'm dealing with are mysteries, meaning that I don't have to understand them because to tell the truth, I can't understand them.  I'm so far from omniscience that it's ridiculous; I can't even remember my work phone number, for goodness sake!  I have to accept that I am very limited in my understanding, so I have to take the Church's word as, if you'll pardon the pun, Gospel.

Deo Gratias!

You left out that albeit, abridged statement of faith, said at the beginning of the Rosary, which effectively places the rest of the prayers solidly as a prayer of faith: The Apostle's Creed.
Right, Zedta. I forgot. Apostle's Creed is another beautiful profession of Faith, by which we begin the Rosary. It is fitting we begin this beautiful method of prayer by a profession of our Apostolic Faith. It's also customary to pray for an increase of the virtues of Faith, Hope, Charity, on the 3 Hail Mary beads. And now we have that beautiful Fatima prayer added, "O My Jesus; forgive us our sins; save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy Mercy." A prayer to save souls from going to hell, just like Our Lady of Fatima asked for often, promising to save souls if we pray for them, and telling us the Rosary is most powerful and efficacious for this. Saintly Sr. Lucia of Fatima has also often repeated to us that there is no problem, no matter how grave, that cannot be solved by the Rosary.

Now, some quotes from Pope and Saints on the Holy Rosary:

Do you ever wonder if the Rosary is worth the fight? The eye rolls? The grumbling? The mumbling?
Take a minute and dive into these quotes.  I think you will doubt no longer.  What a gift we have in the Most Holy Rosary.
Be sure to check out our sister site at: aromarosary.com where you can discover tools to help make your rosary more meaningful, smell more beautiful and even sound more angelic. Especially take not of our family mediation recording that is done in a Byzantine style.
“If I had an army to say the Rosary, I could conquer the world.” -Blessed Pope Piux IX
“The Rosary is the ‘weapon’ for these times.” -Saint Padre Pio
“Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.” -St. Padre Pio
“The greatest method of praying is to pray the Rosary.” – Saint Francis de Sales
“Go to the Madonna. Love her! Always say the Rosary. Say it well. Say it as often as you can! Be souls of prayer. Never tire of praying, it is what is essential. Prayer shakes the Heart of God, it obtains necessary graces!” -St. Padre Pio
“The holy Rosary is a powerful weapon. Use it with confidence and you’ll be amazed at the results.” -St. Josemaria Escriva
“Say the Holy Rosary. Blessed be that monotony of Hail Mary’s which purifies the monotony of your sins!” -St. Josemaria Escriva
“The Rosary is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin…If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors.” – Pope Pius XI
“The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.” – Archbishop Fulton Sheen
“The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying.” – Pope Leo XIII
“No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary” – Bishop Hugh Doyle
“The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families…that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.” -Sister Lucia dos Santos of Fatima
“Here is an example to help you understand the efficacy of the Rosary. You remember the story of David who vanquished Goliath. What steps did the young Israelite take to overthrow the giant? He struck him in the middle of the forehead with a pebble from his sling. If we regard the Philistine as representing evil and all its powers: heresy, impurity, pride, we can consider the little stones from the sling capable of overthrowing the enemy as symbolizing the Aves of the Rosary.
The ways of God are entirely different from our ways. To us it seems necessary to employ powerful means in order to produce great effects. This is not God’s method; quite the contrary. He likes to choose the weakest instruments that He may confound the strong: “God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong — Infirma mundi elegit ut confundat fortia” (1 Cor 1:27).
Have you not often met poor old women who are most faithful to the pious recitation of the Rosary? You also must do all that you can to recite it with fervour. Get right down, at the feet of Jesus: it is a good thing to make oneself small in the presence of so great a God.” -Dom Columba Marmion, Christ, the Ideal of the Priest
“Whoever spreads the Rosary is Saved.” -Blessed Bartolo Longo
“If you say the Rosary faithfully until death, I do assure you that, in spite of the gravity of your sins, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. For even if you are now on the brink of damnation, even if you have one foot in hell, even if you have sold your soul to the devil…sooner or later you will be converted and will amend your life and save your soul. If–you say the Rosary devoutly every day of your life.” -St. Louis De Montfort
“The Rosary is my favorite prayer.” -St. Pope John Paul II
“When the Holy Rosary is said well, it gives Jesus and Mary more glory and is more meritorious than any other prayer.” -Saint Louis de Montfort
“The Holy Rosary is the storehouse of countless blessing.” -Blessed Alan de la Roche
“One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” -Saint Dominic
“Never will anyone who says his Rosary every day be led astray. This is a statement that I would gladly sign with my blood.” -Saint Louis de Montfort
“The Rosary is the most beautiful and the most rich in graces of all prayers; it is the prayer that touches most the Heart of the Mother of God…and if you wish peace to reign in your homes, recite the family Rosary.” -Pope Saint Pius X
“When you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly guess. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary.”-Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche
“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee!’ No creature has ever said anything that was more pleasing to me, nor will anyone ever be able to find or say to me anything that pleases me more.” -Our Lady to Saint Mechtilde
“One day, St. Dominic prayed to Our Lady that she would force the devils who possessed a man to reveal the truth about devotion to her. The devils were forced by Our Lady to reveal: Listen to what the devils said, ‘Now that we are forced to speak we must also tell you this: Nobody who perseveres in saying the Rosary will be damned, because she obtains for her servants the grace of true contrition for their sins and by means of this they obtain God’s forgiveness and mercy.’”
“Making the rosary a family prayer is very pleasing to me. I ask that all families strive to do so.  But be careful to say the Rosary with great devotion, meditating on each mystery and striving to imitate in your daily lives the virtues depicted. Live the mysteries of the rosary as I lived them, and it will become a chain binding you to me forever.  They who are found in the circle of my rosary will never be lost.  I myself will lead them at death to the throne of my Son, to be eternally united to Him.” -Our Lady of America

“The Rosary is the Bible on a String.” -Fr. Ronan Murphy
“My impression is that the Rosary is of the greatest value not only according to the words of Our Lady of Fatima, but according to the effects of the Rosary one sees throughout history. My impression is that Our Lady wanted to give ordinary people, who might not know how to pray, this simple method of getting closer to God.” -Sister Lucia, one of the seers of Fatima
For Christians, the first of books is the Gospel and the Rosary is actually the abridgment of the Gospel.” -Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire

“The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world.” -Pope John XXIII

“Continue to pray the Rosary every day.” -Our Lady of Fatima to Sister Lucia
“You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.” -Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche
“The rosary is the scourge of the devil.” -Pope Adrian VI
“We put great confidence in the Holy Rosary for the healing of evils which afflict our times.” -Pope Pius XII
“The Rosary is a school for learning true Christian perfection.” -Pope John XXIII
“Those who say the Rosary frequently and fervently will gradually grow in grace and holiness and will enjoy the special protection of Our Lady and the abiding friendship of God.” -Bishop Hugh Boyle
“The Family that prays together, stays together.” -Father Patrick Peyton
“If families give Our Lady fifteen minutes a day by reciting the Rosary, I assure them that their homes will become, by God’s grace, peaceful places.” -Father Patrick Peyton
“If our age in its pride laughs at and rejects Our Lady’s Rosary, a countless legion of the most saintly men of every age and of every condition have not only held it most dear and have most piously recited it but have also used it at all times as a most powerful weapon to overcome the devil, to preserve the purity of their lives, to acquire virtue more zealously, in a word, to promote peace among men.” -Pope Pius XI

This is from the diary of Sr. Maria das Doves (Lucia) of the Fatima Prayer:

"Oh my Jesus, pardon our sins, save us from the fire of hell; draw all souls to heaven, especially those in most need."

I forgot where I found this and neglected to reference it in my notes.

Nice, Zedta. Another Fatima Prayer is: "Most Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - I adore thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference's whereby He is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners."
