SVDP do housecalls on poor people and hand over cash money for groceries, clothing and other necessities. It seems to me that one is almost a private social worker.

Which is exactly why Blessed Frédéric Ozanam founded the Society, because in 1833 there were no government social workers. He founded it as a society for the sanctification of its members by personal service to the poor.

We had a very good KofC group at our parish (FSSP). I believe it really can vary quite a bit from chapter to chapter.
We did a lot of great things for our parish, and for the FSSP seminary. Last year we all decided to terminate our relationship with KofC, as we were not happy with where their focus and priorities were going (high focus on profits from their insurance, etc., not to mention the cringy feel-good-isms that saturated their publications. And boy, did they throw a serious temper tantrum. Long story for another time, perhaps.)
We have since formed an all men's Saint Joseph's Guild in its place. Still active and help the parish, local charities, and FSSP.
