Tarantino... very, very overrated. Reservoir Dogs in particular. That movie is a piece of garbage.
8 1/2 is incoherent.
Apocalypse Now is also overrated. I have no idea what the movie is trying to say, and I’m not convinced Coppola knows either. Clearly it’s something about the experience of encountering the darkness within (and of life), but it’s also pretty pretentious, IMO. The surfing scene is big time overrated. I get how insane and over the top it is, and I get that “that’s the point” of the scene. Doesn’t make it good, however.
Apocalypse Now is based on the book of The Heart of Darkness, as can be shown by the villain sharing the same name as the book character. The movie is not a anti war film per se. Apparently, the directors were hawks about the war in 'Nam. Rather, the film basically makes it clear that war is NOT a picnic...unless you are of the likes of Kilgore. I personally like that. Because, despite what Rambo and Die Hard and what have you might make you think, war is not pleasant, it is not a fun day in the field. Basically, if you really want to show war in a film, it has to be dark and often gory, because war...is hellish, it is confusing, it can even be outright bizarre. If you really want a war film or anti war film or what have you...go to Youtube and look up the film, Come and See. It is an 1980's Russian film about partisans in Belarus during ww2 fighting occupying forces. It is an absolutely horrifying reminder of what can go on during war. It is in part based on the directors own experience as a partisan in ww2. The 13 year old playing the protagonist, does an excellent job. The director himself said that the kid could have gotten into the cuckoo house, because he went into such states during acting.

Sorry Anon, but I'm going to have to place Come and See in the list. While a good film overall, I do think it is hyped up.

Since we are on the topic of WW2. Let me cast Saving Private Ryan as well. Good film, but over hyped. I think Band of Brothers was much better.
