Was John Hardon S.J. a traditionalist?  Are his books safe to read from a traditional point of view?

Yes.  All of his material is 100% loyal to the Catholic teaching.
 
Was he a traditionalist? Well, I know he used to celebrate the tridentine mass every day; but many of his stuff includes quotes from Vatican II.

  Yes, but he also said that the Syllabus errorum was binding in conscience, both interiorly and exteriorily, upon every Catholic and this in a book which received a post VII imprimature! Obviously, if he taught that, he wasn't tainted by the "Counter-Syllabus" of VII.
